Destination Mexico City: Food Tour

When I returned from our vacation to Mexico City everyone asked me, "How was the food?" They asked because they knew the answer: It was amazing.

La Casa De Las Sirenas

You don’t come for the food here, although it’s not bad, you come for the gorgeous patio.  If you have trouble with stairs, there is no elevator here.  Walk up 3 flights of gorgeous stairs, lit with ornate stained glass windows, to the patio.  The patio gives you a view of the Cathedral National as well as the Presidential Palace.  We timed it so that we could see the view as the sun set. It’s magical to watch it all in the changing light.

Café De Tacuba

Café De Tacuba is another place that’s all about ambience.  You feel like you walked into a movie set for 1930’s Mexico City.  The mariachis, the décor and those freakin awesome starched bows in the waitress’ hair.  Everything about this place screams, you are in Mexico, have a margarita and have a great time. And I did.

Market

We had heard that many of the restaurants were closed on Sundays.  So we headed to the market to purchase a few things for dinner.  On our list, fresh tortillas, meat and fruit juice.

Our butcher had only a pinkie and thumb on one hand, an occupational hazard to be sure.  We asked him if we could take a picture and he actually posed for us, looking wistfully into the distance, reminiscing about his missing fingers no doubt.

The juice in Mexico City is amazing and so inexpensive.  We purchased two half gallons squeezed fresh in front of us for less than $5.

Limosneros

This restaurant was a highlight of the trip. I thought it was a wine bar from the outside but turned out to be a high end restaurant, traditional Mexican ingredients with a twist.  There were teardrop shaped bottles of mescal hanging in the bar which we of course had to try.  One of the treats was having salsa made to order table side.  Do you like yours on the tomato side? Spicy? More vinegar? A smokey flavor? They've got you covered.

Crickets

Not sure where we were but my youngest was dying to try crickets while we were in town.  He gobbled them all up while his older brother, age 7 said, "Move them to your side of the table.  They are making me sad"

Purse racks

Every Single Restaurant had a purse rack.  My sister in law and I fell in love with these. We never had to set our purses on the floor like a Philistine. We wondered why we do not have these in the States.  We may have to go in business for ourselves.

The best food of all came at the end of the trip, when we had a day layover in LA where we stayed at my mother in laws.  Early morning before our flight home, my mother in law brings out homemade Pozole for breakfast.  Nothing beats food made with love
